What Gives You Meaning?
I received a text message from one of my girlfriends this week, it was in response to a voice message that I left her earlier. She is going through an extremely difficult time, and I wanted to reach out and let her know she is loved, she is thought of, and that this too shall pass.
The message that she sent me back made my day, not from an ego sense, but a purpose in this life sense. I will share the message with all of you while keeping her anonymity:
"Patricia my sweetest, I just wanted to say a massive thank you for being YOU and your message. It made me truly smile in all these hard times, I haven't smiled in a long while... the fact that you are there for me and think of me means the world to me. I told my mum about you and she says how grateful I should be to have you in my life... which I am... thanks for being YOU... you are a true friend."
I know what gives me meaning and joy. It's in the kindness that I can show to another person, the Love that I can give, and ultimately my time, in whatever way I choose to use it. Because our time is a finite resource that we can't make more of.
Maybe it's time to shift our focus from the self to the selfless, even just for a moment. Ask yourself how can I serve today? What act of kindness can you do for another human being today? A text message, a phone call, just letting someone know that you are thinking of them and that you care is huge, and can go such a long way.
Try putting yourself in someone else's' shoes, if only for a few moments. Feel compassion and love for all the people in your life, because truly we never know.
These are unprecedented times, and we all need to walk a bit of a kinder path. Imagine the ripple effects.
Namaste!
